Executive Summary

The YayReviews WordPress plugin before version 1.4.1 has an unauthenticated sensitive data disclosure vulnerability. It exposes an unrestricted API endpoint that returns customer review records, including those pending moderation. Attackers can access reviewers' email addresses and other non-public review content without authentication.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, check if the YayReviews plugin version is between 1.0.4 and 1.4.0. Use commands like 'wp plugin list' in WordPress or inspect the plugin files for version details. Test the vulnerable API endpoint by accessing '/wp-json/yayreviews/v1/reviews' without authentication to see if it returns review data.

Impact Analysis

Attackers can harvest sensitive customer data such as email addresses and review content, leading to privacy breaches. This may result in spam, phishing attacks, or reputational damage for affected businesses using the plugin.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability likely violates GDPR and other privacy regulations by exposing personal data without consent. Organizations using the plugin may face legal penalties, fines, and mandatory breach notifications under these standards.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately update the YayReviews plugin to version 1.4.1 or later. If updating is not possible, consider disabling the plugin temporarily until an update is applied. Review server logs for unauthorized access attempts to the API endpoint '/wp-json/yayreviews/v1/reviews'.
