Executive Summary

This is a stack-based buffer overflow vulnerability in BUFFALO Wi-Fi products. It allows a non-authenticated attacker to send a specially crafted HTTP request that triggers a denial-of-service (DoS) condition by overwriting stack memory.

Detection Guidance

This vulnerability can be detected by checking the firmware versions of affected Buffalo Wi-Fi products. For WSR-300HP, verify if the firmware is prior to 2.55. For WEX-G300, check if the firmware is prior to 1.71. If automatic updates are enabled, confirm the fixes are applied.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could exploit this to crash affected Wi-Fi devices, causing network disruptions or rendering services unavailable. Since no authentication is required, any device connected to the network could be targeted.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could impact compliance with standards like GDPR and HIPAA by enabling unauthorized access or disruption of services. A stack-based buffer overflow may lead to denial-of-service conditions, potentially compromising data availability. Unauthenticated remote exploitation could violate confidentiality and integrity requirements under these regulations.

Mitigation Strategies

Apply the latest firmware updates from BUFFALO for affected Wi-Fi products to patch the stack-based buffer overflow vulnerability. Isolate vulnerable devices from critical network segments until patched. Monitor network traffic for unusual HTTP requests targeting Wi-Fi devices.
