CWE ID Description
CWE-416 The product reuses or references memory after it has been freed. At some point afterward, the memory may be allocated again and saved in another pointer, while the original pointer references a location somewhere within the new allocation. Any operations using the original pointer are no longer valid because the memory "belongs" to the code that operates on the new pointer.

Executive Summary

This is a use-after-free vulnerability in PDFium, the PDF rendering engine used by Google Chrome. A use-after-free occurs when a program tries to access memory that has already been freed, potentially leading to arbitrary code execution. In this case, a remote attacker could exploit this by tricking a user into opening a specially crafted PDF file, allowing them to run malicious code within Chrome's sandboxed environment.

Impact Analysis

If exploited, this vulnerability could allow an attacker to execute arbitrary code on your system. Since it occurs through a PDF file, simply opening a malicious PDF in Chrome could trigger the exploit. The sandbox limits the impact, but successful exploitation might still lead to data theft, installation of malware, or unauthorized system access.

Mitigation Strategies

Update Google Chrome to version 154.0.8037.57 or later to address the use after free vulnerability in PDFium.
