Tauri Dialog Plugin Recursive Directory Access via XSS

Vulnerability report for CVE-2026-95627, including description, CVSS score, EPSS score, affected products, exploitability, helpful resources, and attack-flow context.

Description

When a Tauri application uses the dialog plugin's file or folder picker, an attacker with JavaScript execution (XSS) can force the scope expansion to be recursive, granting read/write access to an entire directory tree after a single user click on a normal-looking OS file dialog. The user has no indication that recursive access was granted, and the expanded scope cannot be revoked for the lifetime of the application.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability affects Tauri applications using the dialog plugin's file or folder picker. An attacker with JavaScript execution (XSS) can trick the application into recursively expanding directory access permissions after a single user click. The user remains unaware of the expanded access scope, which cannot be revoked during the application's lifetime.

Impact Analysis

If you use a vulnerable Tauri application, an attacker could gain unauthorized read/write access to your entire directory tree through a normal-looking file dialog prompt. This could lead to data theft, modification, or further exploitation of your system.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could violate compliance requirements by enabling unauthorized access to sensitive data, potentially leading to data breaches. GDPR and HIPAA both mandate strict data access controls, which this flaw undermines by allowing persistent, undetectable overprivileged access.

Mitigation Strategies

Disable the dialog plugin's file or folder picker feature in Tauri applications until a patch is released. Review application permissions to ensure no unintended directory access has been granted.
