Description

Databasement before 1.7.14 validates invitation tokens only when the acceptance page loads, caching the authorization decision without re-checking token validity during acceptance. Attackers with a leaked or forwarded invitation link can load the page while pending, then accept the invitation after the legitimate user has already accepted it to overwrite the account password and gain authenticated access to managed database credentials and secrets.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability in Databasement before 1.7.14 allows attackers to bypass authorization by exploiting stale invitation tokens. The application caches authorization decisions when the acceptance page loads but does not re-validate tokens during the actual acceptance process. Attackers with a leaked or forwarded invitation link can load the page while the token is pending, then accept it after the legitimate user has already done so. This lets them overwrite the account password and gain access to managed database credentials and secrets.

Detection Guidance

Check if your Databasement instance is running a version before 1.7.14. Review logs for unusual invitation acceptance events where tokens were used after the legitimate user had already accepted. Inspect network traffic for repeated requests to the invitation acceptance endpoint.

Impact Analysis

If you use Databasement before version 1.7.14, an attacker could gain unauthorized access to your database credentials and secrets by exploiting a leaked or forwarded invitation link. This could lead to data breaches, unauthorized modifications, or exposure of sensitive information stored in your databases.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access to sensitive data, violating compliance requirements such as GDPR (data protection) and HIPAA (health information privacy). Unauthorized access may result in data breaches, leading to legal penalties, reputational damage, and loss of trust in systems handling regulated data.

Mitigation Strategies

Upgrade Databasement to version 1.7.14 or later immediately. Review and revoke any pending invitations that may have been exposed. Monitor for unauthorized account access or password changes.
