Description

A flaw was found in the Admin REST API of Keycloak, an identity and access management solution. The endpoints used to retrieve groups associated with a specific role do not properly check for individual group visibility permissions. This allows a delegated administrator with basic search privileges to view detailed information about all groups assigned to a role, bypassing intended security restrictions that should limit their view to specific groups.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability is in Keycloak's Admin REST API. It allows delegated administrators with basic search privileges to view detailed information about all groups assigned to a role, even if they should only see specific groups. The issue is due to improper enforcement of group visibility permissions in the endpoints that retrieve groups for a role.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, monitor Keycloak logs for unauthorized access attempts to group information via the Admin REST API. Check for excessive queries to endpoints related to role-group associations. Use network monitoring tools to inspect traffic to Keycloak's admin API endpoints for unusual patterns.

Impact Analysis

An attacker with delegated admin privileges could exploit this to bypass security restrictions and view sensitive group metadata and membership details they are not authorized to see. This could lead to unauthorized information disclosure.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could impact compliance by allowing unauthorized access to sensitive group information, potentially violating data protection requirements under GDPR or HIPAA that mandate strict access controls and confidentiality of personal data.

Mitigation Strategies

Since no official mitigation is available, restrict delegated administrator privileges to only necessary roles. Implement network-level controls to limit access to Keycloak's Admin REST API. Monitor for suspicious activity and consider upgrading to a patched version once released.
