Executive Summary

This vulnerability is an Insecure Direct Object Reference (IDOR) where the Akia keyless entry cloud service fails to properly authorize server-side requests. An authenticated guest can supply a room or door identifier and unlock doors other than their own by exploiting this missing object-level authorization.

Detection Guidance

Since the vulnerability involves unauthorized access to rooms via client-supplied identifiers, check server logs for repeated or unusual unlock requests. Monitor for multiple successful unlocks from the same authenticated guest account or requests targeting different room/door IDs than their booking. Verify if the server properly validates room/door IDs against the guest's reservation before processing unlock commands.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could gain unauthorized physical access to guest rooms at a property by exploiting this flaw. This could lead to theft, privacy violations, or other malicious activities within the affected rooms.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized physical access, potentially violating data protection and privacy regulations like GDPR or HIPAA if guest data or room access controls are compromised. However, specific compliance impacts depend on the property's adherence to these standards.

Mitigation Strategies

As of September 19, 2026, the service is no longer vulnerable to this attack according to the reporter. However, if you are using Akia's keyless entry cloud service, ensure your system is updated to the latest version. Review access logs for any suspicious activity and confirm that server-side authorization checks for room/door IDs are properly implemented against guest bookings.
