Description

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: ALSA: usbusx2y: validate URB actual_length in interrupt callback i_usx2y_in04_int() processes the interrupt URB data without checking urb->actual_length. A short transfer from a malfunctioning device would cause the handler to process uninitialized heap data from the kmalloc-allocated in04_buf, which is then copied to the mmap-accessible ctl_snapshot[] array. Fix by using kzalloc() for in04_buf to zero-initialize the buffer, and adding an actual_length check to skip processing on short transfers while still resubmitting the URB.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability in the Linux kernel involves improper handling of USB interrupt data in the usbusx2y driver. The function i_usx2y_in04_int() processes USB data without verifying the actual length of received data. A malfunctioning device sending short transfers could cause the handler to process uninitialized memory, which is then copied to a user-accessible buffer.

Detection Guidance

This vulnerability affects the Linux kernel's ALSA usbusx2y driver. Detection requires checking kernel logs for related errors or examining the driver's behavior during USB audio device interactions. No specific commands are provided in the context.

Impact Analysis

An attacker with access to a vulnerable system could exploit this flaw to read uninitialized kernel memory. This may lead to information disclosure, privilege escalation, or system instability if malicious data is processed. Users of affected Linux systems should update their kernels.

Mitigation Strategies

Update your Linux kernel to the patched version that includes the fix for this vulnerability. The patch involves zero-initializing buffers and adding length checks in the usbusx2y driver.
