Description

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: net: net_failover: Fix the deadlock in net_failover_slave_name_change() This is a sibling fix of commit b84c5632c7b3 ("net: net_failover: Fix the deadlock in slave register"). There is netdev_lock_ops() in the upper callers, so using netif_open() instead of dev_open(). Executive Summary

This vulnerability is a deadlock issue in the Linux kernel's net_failover module. It occurs when renaming a slave network device, causing a system hang due to improper locking. The fix replaces dev_open() with netif_open() to avoid conflicts with netdev_lock_ops() in upper callers.

Detection Guidance

This vulnerability is specific to the Linux kernel's net_failover functionality and involves a deadlock scenario. Detection requires checking kernel logs for deadlock events or system hangs related to net_failover operations. Monitor logs for messages indicating mutex lock failures or scheduling issues in network device operations.

Impact Analysis

This vulnerability can cause system freezes or crashes when network device names are changed, potentially leading to denial of service. It affects systems using net_failover for virtual network interfaces.

Mitigation Strategies

Apply the kernel patch that resolves this issue. Update your Linux kernel to a version that includes the fix for net_failover_slave_name_change. Avoid manual workarounds as they may not fully address the root cause. Monitor vendor advisories for kernel updates.
