Description

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: af_packet: Don't cast tpacket_hdr.tp_len to int in tpacket_parse_header(). syzbot reported BUG() in sock_sendmsg_nosec(). [0] The problem is that tpacket_parse_header() casts user-provided tpacket_hdr.tp_len, which is u32, to int. If the length is larger than INT_MAX, the following condition in tpacket_parse_header() passes, if (unlikely(tp_len > size_max)) and any negative value can be returned to the caller, up to sock_sendmsg_nosec(). The repro set tpacket_hdr.tp_len to 0xfffffdef, which is cast to -EIOCBQUEUED (-529), triggering BUG() in sock_sendmsg_nosec(). *(uint64_t*)0x200000000008 = 0xfffffdef; ... syscall(__NR_write, /*fd=*/r[0], /*buf=*/0x200000000000ul, /*count=*/1ul); Let's define the local tp_len as u32 in tpacket_parse_header(). Executive Summary

This vulnerability in the Linux kernel involves a type casting issue in the af_packet module. The function tpacket_parse_header() incorrectly casts a user-provided 32-bit unsigned integer (u32) tpacket_hdr.tp_len to a signed integer (int). When the value exceeds INT_MAX, it becomes negative, leading to a kernel bug (BUG()) in sock_sendmsg_nosec().

Detection Guidance

This vulnerability is specific to the Linux kernel's af_packet implementation and may not have direct detection commands. Monitor kernel logs for BUG() or oops messages in sock_sendmsg_nosec() after network operations involving packet sockets. Check for crashes or kernel panics during high network load.

Impact Analysis

This vulnerability can cause a kernel crash (BUG()) when processing certain network packets, leading to a denial of service (DoS) condition. It may allow local attackers to trigger system instability or crash the system by sending specially crafted packets.

Mitigation Strategies

Apply the latest Linux kernel security patches to fix the tpacket_parse_header() issue. Disable packet socket usage if not required. Monitor kernel logs for suspicious activity. Restrict untrusted users from creating packet sockets.
