Description

The HireZoot WordPress plugin before 4.0.0 does not sanitise and escape one of its job specification settings before it is reflected back into an admin-area settings page, allowing users with the HireZoot WordPress plugin before 4.0.0's management capability (Administrator by default) to store a payload that is executed in the browser of any administrator who later opens that page. As the unfiltered_html capability is not available to administrators on multisite (or where DISALLOW_UNFILTERED_HTML is set), this leads to Stored Cross-Site Scripting.

Executive Summary

This is a stored Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) vulnerability in the HireZoot WordPress plugin before version 4.0.0. It occurs because the plugin does not properly sanitize and escape a job specification setting before reflecting it back into an admin settings page. This allows users with management capabilities, typically administrators, to inject malicious scripts that execute in the browsers of other administrators when they view the affected page.

Detection Guidance

Check the installed version of the HireZoot WordPress plugin. If it is below 4.0.0, the system is vulnerable. Use commands like 'wp plugin list' in WordPress CLI or inspect the plugin files directly.

Impact Analysis

An attacker with administrative access could exploit this to inject malicious scripts into the WordPress admin interface. When another administrator views the compromised settings page, the script executes in their browser, potentially stealing session cookies, performing actions on their behalf, or redirecting them to malicious sites. This could lead to unauthorized access or control of the WordPress site.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could impact compliance by exposing sensitive admin data or allowing unauthorized actions on the site. For GDPR, it may lead to unauthorized access to personal data. For HIPAA, it could compromise protected health information if the site handles such data. The risk depends on the site's data handling and whether the vulnerability is exploited.

Mitigation Strategies

Update the HireZoot WordPress plugin to version 4.0.0 or later immediately. If updating is not possible, consider disabling the plugin until an update is applied.
