Executive Summary

CVE-2025-52097 is a reflected cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability in InstantForum.NET v4.1.4. It allows attackers to inject malicious JavaScript via the unsanitized 'hbhxg' query parameter. When a user visits a crafted URL, the injected script executes in their browser, enabling actions like session hijacking or data theft.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, monitor web traffic for requests containing the unsanitized query string parameter 'hbhxg' in InstantForum.NET v4.1.4. Use tools like Burp Suite or OWASP ZAP to intercept and inspect HTTP requests for suspicious payloads in the 'hbhxg' parameter. Check server logs for unusual input patterns or encoded JavaScript in query strings.

Impact Analysis

This vulnerability can allow attackers to steal session cookies, perform phishing attacks, or access sensitive user data. If you use InstantForum.NET v4.1.4, visiting a malicious link could compromise your account or expose personal information.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized data access, violating GDPR (data protection) and HIPAA (health data privacy). Non-compliance risks fines, legal action, and reputational damage due to potential breaches of user data.

Mitigation Strategies

Implement input validation to sanitize the 'hbhxg' parameter and output encoding using libraries like Microsoft AntiXSS or ASP.NET encoding methods. Deploy a Web Application Firewall (WAF) to block XSS payloads. Consider migrating to an actively maintained forum platform as the vendor is no longer operational and no official patch exists.
