Executive Summary

This is a stored cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability in Frappe versions before 14.99.10 and 15.x before 15.91.1. It occurs because user names are displayed without proper sanitization on the leaderboard page. Attackers with valid credentials can set a malicious user name that executes arbitrary JavaScript when other users view the leaderboard.

Detection Guidance

Check if your Frappe instance version is below 14.99.10 or 15.x below 15.91.1 by running: bench version. Inspect user names rendered in the leaderboard page for improperly neutralized content. Look for user names containing JavaScript code or unusual characters.

Impact Analysis

Authenticated attackers could steal session cookies, perform actions on behalf of users, or redirect users to malicious sites. Regular users viewing the leaderboard may have their browsers compromised without any further interaction.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access to user data, violating GDPR's data protection principles and HIPAA's security requirements for protected health information. Organizations may face compliance violations if user data is exposed through this exploit.

Mitigation Strategies

Upgrade Frappe to version 14.99.10 or later for 14.x, or 15.91.1 or later for 15.x. Review and sanitize user names to remove any malicious scripts. Monitor leaderboard page interactions for unexpected behavior.
