Description

GitLab has remediated an issue in GitLab CE/EE affecting all versions from 10.3 before 19.2.8, 19.3 before 19.3.5, and 19.4 before 19.4.2 that, under certain conditions, could have allowed an authenticated user to perform server-side request forgery and reach internal network resources due to a time-of-check to time-of-use race condition in URL validation during repository import operations.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability is a server-side request forgery (SSRF) flaw in GitLab CE/EE versions before 19.2.8, 19.3.5, and 19.4.2. It occurs due to a time-of-check to time-of-use race condition during URL validation in repository import operations, allowing an authenticated user to bypass restrictions and access internal network resources.

Impact Analysis

An attacker with authenticated access could exploit this to make unauthorized requests to internal systems, potentially accessing sensitive data or services. This could lead to data breaches, unauthorized modifications, or further network infiltration depending on the internal resources exposed.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access to sensitive data, violating GDPR's data protection requirements and HIPAA's safeguards for protected health information. Non-compliance may result in legal penalties, reputational damage, and loss of trust.

Mitigation Strategies

Upgrade GitLab to version 19.4.2, 19.3.5, or 19.2.8 or later immediately to address the vulnerability. Check your current version with 'gitlab-rake gitlab:env:info' and follow the official upgrade guide.
