Description

The FiboSearch – Ajax Search for WooCommerce plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to Stored Cross-Site Scripting via the 'purchased_plan' parameter in all versions up to, and including, 1.34.2 due to insufficient input sanitization and output escaping. This makes it possible for authenticated attackers, with subscriber-level access and above, to inject arbitrary web scripts in pages that will execute whenever a user accesses an injected page. Exploitation requires that the site owner has previously completed the standard Freemius opt-in flow; once that condition is met, any Subscriber can reach the vulnerable handler simply by loading /wp-admin/profile.php with the requisite query parameters.

Executive Summary

The FiboSearch – Ajax Search for WooCommerce plugin for WordPress has a stored cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability in versions up to 1.34.2. The flaw exists in the 'purchased_plan' parameter due to insufficient input sanitization and output escaping. Authenticated attackers with subscriber-level access or higher can inject malicious scripts into pages. These scripts execute when users visit the affected pages.

Detection Guidance

Check for the FiboSearch plugin version up to 1.34.2. Inspect WordPress admin pages for unusual scripts in the 'purchased_plan' parameter. Review user roles with subscriber access or higher for suspicious activity.

Impact Analysis

Attackers could steal user sessions, redirect users to malicious sites, or perform actions on their behalf. The impact depends on user privileges. Subscriber-level access is sufficient to exploit this, making it a significant risk for WordPress sites using the vulnerable plugin.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access to user data, violating GDPR and HIPAA requirements for data protection and access controls. Organizations may face compliance penalties if user data is compromised through such exploits.

Mitigation Strategies

Update the FiboSearch plugin to the latest version beyond 1.34.2. Remove or restrict subscriber-level access if unnecessary. Monitor admin pages for unauthorized script injections.
