Description

The The WP Ultimate Review plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to arbitrary shortcode execution in all versions up to, and including, 2.4.3. This is due to the software allowing users to execute an action that does not properly validate a value before running do_shortcode. This makes it possible for unauthenticated attackers to execute arbitrary shortcodes. The nonce required to pass the only gate is emitted to unauthenticated visitors via the public review form, and submitted shortcode payloads are auto-published without admin approval by default, meaning exploitation requires no account and no privileged interaction.

Executive Summary

The WP Ultimate Review plugin for WordPress has a flaw allowing arbitrary shortcode execution in versions up to 2.4.3. The plugin fails to validate a value before running do_shortcode, enabling unauthenticated attackers to execute arbitrary shortcodes. The required nonce is exposed to unauthenticated visitors via the public review form, and shortcode payloads are auto-published without admin approval by default.

Detection Guidance

This vulnerability allows unauthenticated attackers to execute arbitrary shortcodes via the WP Ultimate Review plugin. To detect it, check for unauthorized shortcode execution in WordPress logs or server access logs. Look for POST requests to /wp-admin/admin-ajax.php with shortcode parameters. Review plugin files for unexpected modifications or new shortcodes.

Impact Analysis

Unauthenticated attackers could exploit this to execute malicious shortcodes on your WordPress site. This may lead to unauthorized actions, data leaks, or defacement. Since no account or privileged interaction is needed, the risk is high for any site using the vulnerable plugin version.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized data access or modification, violating GDPR (data protection) and HIPAA (health data privacy). If exploited, it may result in non-compliance, legal penalties, or reputational damage due to compromised user data.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately update the WP Ultimate Review plugin to the latest version beyond 2.4.3. If an update is unavailable, consider disabling or removing the plugin until a patch is released. Review all published content for unauthorized shortcode execution and remove any suspicious entries.
