Executive Summary

This is a Stored Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) vulnerability in the User Profile Builder WordPress plugin. It allows unauthenticated attackers to inject malicious scripts via the First Name field due to insufficient input sanitization and output escaping. The vulnerability is exploitable only when the Email Confirmation feature is enabled in Profile Builder.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, inspect WordPress sites using the User Profile Builder plugin up to version 4.0.3. Check if the Email Confirmation feature is enabled. Look for stored XSS payloads in the First Name field of user profiles. Use security plugins or manual code review to identify unsanitized input handling.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could inject malicious scripts that execute when users access infected pages. This could lead to theft of user sessions, defacement of pages, or redirection to malicious sites. The impact depends on user privileges and plugin configuration.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access to user data, potentially violating GDPR (data protection) and HIPAA (health data privacy) requirements. It may result in data breaches, non-compliance penalties, and loss of trust.

Mitigation Strategies

Update the User Profile Builder plugin to the latest version beyond 4.0.3 to patch the vulnerability. Disable the Email Confirmation feature in Profile Builder if it is enabled, as the vulnerability is only exploitable when this feature is active.
