Description

The European VAT Compliance Assistant for WooCommerce plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to Stored Cross-Site Scripting via CF-IPCountry Header in all versions up to, and including, 1.36.10 due to insufficient input sanitization and output escaping. This makes it possible for unauthenticated attackers to inject arbitrary web scripts in pages that will execute whenever a user accesses an injected page. The malicious header value is persisted verbatim into order post-meta during a guest checkout, meaning no account or authentication is required to plant the payload.

Executive Summary

This is a Stored Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) vulnerability in the European VAT Compliance Assistant for WooCommerce plugin for WordPress. It allows unauthenticated attackers to inject malicious scripts via the CF-IPCountry HTTP header. The injected scripts execute when users access affected pages. The vulnerability exists due to insufficient input sanitization and output escaping in versions up to 1.36.10.

Detection Guidance

Check WordPress sites for the European VAT Compliance Assistant plugin versions up to 1.36.10. Inspect HTTP headers for CF-IPCountry values containing suspicious scripts. Review order post-meta data for stored malicious payloads.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could steal user session cookies, redirect users to malicious sites, or perform actions on their behalf. Since the payload persists in order post-meta during guest checkout, no account or authentication is needed to plant the exploit. This could lead to account takeovers or unauthorized data access for users visiting compromised pages.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access to personal data, violating GDPR's data protection principles. For HIPAA, it may expose protected health information if processed through the plugin. Both regulations require safeguards against unauthorized data access or modification, which this vulnerability undermines.

Mitigation Strategies

Update the plugin to the latest version beyond 1.36.10. Implement input sanitization for CF-IPCountry headers. Monitor order post-meta for unauthorized script injections. Consider disabling guest checkout temporarily if updates are delayed.
