Executive Summary

CVE-2026-101290 is an out-of-bounds read vulnerability in the Sick_Safetyscanners_Base C++ driver library (versions 1.0.4 and earlier). A remote attacker can send a specially crafted network packet that causes the library to read memory outside the intended buffer due to insufficient packet length validation. This may lead to application crashes and denial-of-service conditions.

Detection Guidance

Detecting this vulnerability requires monitoring for out-of-bounds read conditions in the Sick_Safetyscanners_Base C++ driver library (versions 1.0.4 and earlier). Check for application crashes or denial-of-service events when processing network packets. Inspect logs for unusual memory access patterns or buffer overflow warnings in the driver's logs.

Impact Analysis

This vulnerability can cause application crashes and denial-of-service conditions, disrupting operations that rely on SICK safety laser scanners. Systems using affected library versions may become unresponsive or require restarting.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability primarily causes denial-of-service conditions by crashing applications, which may impact availability of systems. While it does not directly expose or leak data, prolonged downtime could affect compliance with regulations requiring continuous availability of critical systems, such as HIPAA for healthcare operations or GDPR for data processing systems. However, the provided context does not specify direct impacts on compliance.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately upgrade the Sick_Safetyscanners_Base C++ driver library to version 1.0.5 or later. Restrict network access to the driver to minimize exposure. Apply general security practices such as minimizing network exposure and following secure IT environment guidelines.
