Description

The Forminator Forms – Contact Form, Payment Form & Custom Form Builder plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to Arbitrary Shortcode Execution in versions up to, and including, 1.58.1. This is due to the forminator_replace_quiz_form_data() helper invoking do_shortcode() on the fully expanded notification body once the {quiz_result} merge tag has been substituted, while the earlier-substituted {user_agent} and {refer_url} merge tags carry unauthenticated attacker-controlled bytes (the User-Agent header and the referer_url POST parameter) through sanitize_text_field()/esc_html(), neither of which strip the '[' and ']' shortcode delimiters. This makes it possible for unauthenticated attackers to execute arbitrary WordPress shortcodes registered on the site by submitting a quiz whose notification template contains {quiz_result}; the resulting impact depends on the shortcodes exposed by other installed plugins/themes and can range from arbitrary content injection to information disclosure.

Executive Summary

This WordPress plugin vulnerability allows unauthenticated attackers to execute arbitrary shortcodes by submitting a quiz with a malicious notification template. The issue occurs when user-controlled data like User-Agent headers and referer URLs are not properly sanitized, enabling shortcode execution through merge tags like {quiz_result}.

Detection Guidance

Check if you are running Forminator Forms plugin versions up to and including 1.58.1. Inspect WordPress sites for unauthorized shortcode execution in notification templates or quiz forms. Review server logs for unusual shortcode-related activity or requests containing {quiz_result}, {user_agent}, or {refer_url} parameters.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could exploit this to inject arbitrary content, steal sensitive data, or perform unauthorized actions depending on available shortcodes. The attack requires no authentication and can be triggered via crafted HTTP requests.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized data access or modification, violating GDPR's integrity/confidentiality principles or HIPAA's safeguards for protected health information. Organizations using affected plugins may face compliance violations.

Mitigation Strategies

Update the Forminator Forms plugin to the latest version immediately. Disable or remove any unused WordPress plugins or themes that may expose additional shortcodes. Implement a web application firewall to block malicious shortcode execution attempts.
