Description

A vulnerability has been identified in APOGEE MBC (PPC) (BACnet) (All versions), APOGEE MBC (PPC) (P2 Ethernet) (All versions), APOGEE MEC (PPC) (BACnet) (All versions), APOGEE MEC (PPC) (P2 Ethernet) (All versions), APOGEE PXC Compact (BACnet) (All versions < V3.5.7), APOGEE PXC Compact (P2 Ethernet) (All versions < V2.8.21), APOGEE PXC Modular (BACnet) (All versions < V3.5.7), APOGEE PXC Modular (P2 Ethernet) (All versions < V2.8.21), TALON TC Compact (BACnet) (All versions < V3.5.7), TALON TC Modular (BACnet) (All versions < V3.5.7). The affected product FTP service does not properly validate the length of user-controllable input. This could allow an unauthenticated remote attacker to cause a denial of service.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability affects multiple Siemens building automation products. The FTP service in these products fails to properly validate input length, allowing an unauthenticated remote attacker to cause a denial of service by sending specially crafted input.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, check if any of the affected Siemens products (APOGEE MBC, MEC, PXC Compact/Modular, TALON TC) are running vulnerable versions with FTP or web services enabled. Use network scanning tools like Nmap to identify open FTP (port 21) or web service ports on these devices.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could exploit this to crash the affected systems, disrupting building automation functions like HVAC control. This may lead to operational downtime, safety risks, or loss of critical services in facilities using these products.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could impact compliance with GDPR and HIPAA by enabling denial-of-service attacks on affected systems, potentially disrupting critical operations in environments handling sensitive data. Unauthorized access or service disruption may violate data integrity and availability requirements under these regulations.

Mitigation Strategies

Disable the FTP service on affected systems if not required. Apply vendor patches for versions below the specified thresholds (e.g., APOGEE PXC Compact BACnet < V3.5.7). Monitor network traffic for unusual FTP activity targeting these devices.
