Description

The Kirki – Freeform Page Builder, Website Builder & Customizer plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to Stored Cross-Site Scripting via registration metadata in all versions up to, and including, 6.3.1 This is due to insufficient escaping in `ExceptionalElements::image_element()`, which concatenates a user-meta value straight into an `<img src="…">` attribute. This makes it possible for unauthenticated attackers to inject arbitrary web scripts that execute whenever a user accesses a page rendering a Kirki users collection whose image element is bound to one of the nine registration meta fields. Requires public user registration to be enabled and a published page carrying a `kirki-register` element, which prints the required element nonce into the public markup.

Executive Summary

The Kirki WordPress plugin up to version 6.3.1 has a stored cross-site scripting vulnerability. It occurs because user registration metadata is improperly escaped when rendered in an image element. Attackers can inject malicious scripts into registration fields, which execute when users view pages displaying these fields.

Detection Guidance

Check WordPress sites for the Kirki plugin versions up to 6.3.1. Look for pages with kirki-register elements and inspect user registration metadata fields for unusual script content in image attributes.

Impact Analysis

Unauthenticated attackers can inject scripts that run in users' browsers. This could lead to theft of session cookies, account takeover, or defacement of pages. Requires public user registration and a specific page element to be enabled.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access to user data, violating GDPR's data protection principles or HIPAA's security requirements for protected health information. Organizations may face compliance penalties if user data is compromised.

Mitigation Strategies

Update the Kirki plugin to the latest version beyond 6.3.1. Disable public user registration if not needed. Review and sanitize user registration metadata fields for malicious scripts.
