Vert.x PostgreSQL Client Heap Overflow via Malicious Array Size

Vulnerability report for CVE-2026-102463, including description, CVSS score, EPSS score, affected products, exploitability, helpful resources, and attack-flow context.

Publication date: 2026-10-15

Last updated on: 2026-10-15

Assigner: Eclipse Foundation

Description

In Eclipse Vert.x versions [4.0.0, 4.5.34] or [5.0.0,5.0.12] or [5.1.0,5.1.9] or [5.2.0, 5.2.0], the binary array decoder in vertx-pg-client (DataTypeCodec.binaryDecodeArray) allocates a Java array sized by a server-declared 32-bit dimension count with no upper bound. A malicious or compromised PostgreSQL server, or an on-path attacker intercepting an unencrypted connection, can send a crafted DataRow message with an excessively large array dimension value, causing the client to attempt a multi-gigabyte heap allocation and crash with an OutOfMemoryError. The impacted component is io.vertx:vertx-pg-client.

Executive Summary

CVE-2026-102463 is a denial of service vulnerability in the Eclipse Vert.x PostgreSQL client (vertx-pg-client). It occurs in the binary array decoder where a malicious PostgreSQL server or network attacker can send a crafted message with an extremely large array size. This forces the client to attempt allocating a multi-gigabyte heap, causing an OutOfMemoryError and crashing the application.

Detection Guidance

Monitor for crashes in applications using vertx-pg-client with OutOfMemoryError logs. Check for unusually large memory allocations in PostgreSQL client processes. Inspect network traffic for malformed DataRow messages with excessive array dimensions.

Impact Analysis

This vulnerability can crash applications using affected Vert.x PostgreSQL client versions by consuming excessive memory. It requires no user interaction or privileges and can be triggered remotely if the connection is unencrypted. The impact is primarily on application availability.

Mitigation Strategies

Upgrade vertx-pg-client to patched versions (5.2.1, 5.1.10, or 4.5.35). Use encrypted PostgreSQL connections (SSL/TLS) to prevent on-path attacks. Implement network monitoring for suspicious DataRow messages.
