Vert.x gRPC Server Compression Bomb Vulnerability

Vulnerability report for CVE-2026-102477, including description, CVSS score, EPSS score, affected products, exploitability, helpful resources, and attack-flow context.

Publication date: 2026-10-15

Last updated on: 2026-10-15

Assigner: Eclipse Foundation

Description

In Eclipse Vert.x versions [4.0.0, 4.5.34] or [5.0.0,5.0.12] or [5.1.0,5.1.9] or [5.2.0, 5.2.0], a gRPC endpoint does have a configurable per message maximum size in bytes, however the maximum size applies to the received bytes. When applied to a compressed message, this only applies to the compressed size and not the actual size of the uncompressed content. This can be used to force a gRPC endpoint to allocate more bytes than the value defined by the configuration, making the endpoint vulnerable to compression bomb attacks. The impacted component is io.vertx:vertx-gprc-server.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability affects the gRPC implementation in Eclipse Vert.x's vertx-grpc-server package. It allows attackers to send highly compressed messages that, when decompressed, consume excessive memory. The issue is that the system only checks the compressed size of messages, not the uncompressed size, enabling compression bomb attacks.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, monitor network traffic for unusually large gRPC messages or high memory usage on systems running affected Vert.x versions. Check logs for compression-related errors or crashes in the vertx-grpc-server component. Use tools like Wireshark to inspect gRPC message sizes and compression headers.

Impact Analysis

This vulnerability can lead to denial-of-service conditions by causing the gRPC endpoint to allocate excessive memory. Attackers can remotely exploit it without requiring user interaction or privileges, potentially disrupting service availability.

Mitigation Strategies

Upgrade to patched versions of Vert.x: 4.5.35, 5.1.10, or 5.2.1. If upgrading is not immediately possible, disable gRPC compression or set strict message size limits that account for uncompressed sizes. Implement network-level rate limiting to block suspicious traffic patterns.
