Description

Improper verification of the source of a communication channel in the IPv6 Router Advertisement handler in Amazon FreeRTOS-Plus-TCP before V4.4.2 might allow a remote third-party to influence an endpoint's IPv6 default gateway, on-link prefix, and address configuration via a crafted Router Advertisement. To remediate this issue, users should upgrade to version V4.4.2.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability involves improper verification of the source of IPv6 Router Advertisements in Amazon FreeRTOS-Plus-TCP before version V4.4.2. A remote attacker can send crafted Router Advertisements that the device fails to validate properly, allowing them to manipulate the device's IPv6 default gateway, on-link prefix, and address configuration. This could lead to interception of the device's IPv6 traffic.

Detection Guidance

Detection involves checking if your FreeRTOS-Plus-TCP version is vulnerable (up to V4.4.1) and verifying if IPv6 Router Advertisement processing is enabled. Inspect the FreeRTOSIPConfig.h file for ipconfigUSE_IPv6 and ipconfigUSE_RA settings. Monitor network traffic for unexpected IPv6 Router Advertisements using tools like Wireshark or tcpdump.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could exploit this to redirect your device's network traffic through malicious routes, enabling eavesdropping or man-in-the-middle attacks on IPv6 communications. This may result in data theft, unauthorized access to services, or disruption of network connectivity for devices using affected FreeRTOS-Plus-TCP versions.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access or data interception, violating confidentiality requirements in GDPR and HIPAA. Non-compliance may result if devices handling sensitive data are affected and not patched, potentially exposing personal or health information to attackers.

Mitigation Strategies

Upgrade FreeRTOS-Plus-TCP to V4.4.2. Alternatively, disable IPv6 Router Advertisement processing by setting ipconfigUSE_RA to ipconfigDISABLE in FreeRTOSIPConfig.h. For network-side mitigation, deploy RA Guard or SEND.
