Description

The AcyMailing plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to Stored Cross-Site Scripting via the customField[] parameter of the public frontusers::subscribe endpoint in versions up to, and including, 11.1.0. This is due to insufficient input sanitization and output escaping in the acym_cleanVar() sanitizer, whose HTML-tag stripper only matches complete tags (requiring a closing '>'), together with SubscriberInsertion::replaceUserInformation() and the archive view template, which substitute the stored subscriber field value into the mail body and emit it without HTML encoding. This makes it possible for unauthenticated attackers to inject arbitrary web scripts in pages that will execute whenever a user accesses the online-archive URL for the poisoned subscriber, including administrators who click the plugin-generated link in the Subscribers β†’ History screen.

Executive Summary

The AcyMailing plugin for WordPress has a stored cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability in versions up to 11.1.0. It occurs via the customField[] parameter in the public frontusers::subscribe endpoint. The issue stems from insufficient input sanitization and output escaping in the acym_cleanVar() function, which fails to strip incomplete HTML tags. Attackers can inject malicious scripts that execute when users access the online-archive URL for the affected subscriber, including administrators viewing plugin-generated links.

Impact Analysis

Unauthenticated attackers can inject arbitrary web scripts into pages. When users, including administrators, access the poisoned subscriber's online-archive URL or plugin-generated links, the injected scripts execute. This could lead to unauthorized actions, data theft, or session hijacking on the affected WordPress site.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could compromise user data confidentiality, leading to potential violations of GDPR and HIPAA. If exploited, it may result in unauthorized access to personal or sensitive information, triggering compliance breaches and legal consequences for organizations handling regulated data.

Mitigation Strategies

Update the AcyMailing plugin for WordPress to the latest version, which patches this vulnerability. If updating is not immediately possible, consider disabling the plugin temporarily until an update is applied.
