Executive Summary

This vulnerability is a stored Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) flaw in the Prenotazioni WordPress plugin versions 1.7.5 and below. It occurs because the plugin lacks authorization and CSRF checks when saving settings, allowing unauthenticated users to inject malicious scripts. These scripts are then stored and executed when administrators or site visitors view affected pages.

Detection Guidance

Check if the Prenotazioni WordPress plugin version 1.7.5 or below is installed. Inspect plugin settings for unauthenticated changes or unusual JavaScript injections in output. Review server logs for suspicious activity related to WordPress admin pages.

Impact Analysis

This vulnerability can allow attackers to execute malicious scripts in the browsers of administrators and site visitors. This could lead to theft of session cookies, account takeover, or defacement of the website. Administrators may unknowingly compromise their own systems or those of visitors.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to non-compliance with GDPR and HIPAA due to potential unauthorized access to personal data. GDPR requires protection against data breaches, and HIPAA mandates safeguards for protected health information. Exploitation of this flaw may result in data exposure, triggering regulatory penalties.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately update the Prenotazioni plugin to the latest version if available. If no update exists, consider disabling the plugin until a patch is released. Implement strict input validation and output escaping for WordPress settings. Monitor for unauthorized admin changes or script injections.
