Executive Summary

The GPTranslate WordPress plugin before version 2.34.14 has a flaw where it does not restrict who can store translations. When server-side translations are enabled, it also fails to escape these translations when displaying them on pages. This allows unauthenticated users to inject malicious scripts via a stored Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) attack.

Detection Guidance

Check if the GPTranslate WordPress plugin version is below 2.34.14. Inspect server-side translation logs for unusual script injections. Look for unauthenticated REST API requests storing translations.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could exploit this to inject malicious scripts into your WordPress site. These scripts could steal user data, hijack sessions, or perform actions on behalf of users without their knowledge. It may also lead to defacement or further compromise of your website.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access to user data, violating GDPR's data protection requirements and HIPAA's safeguards for protected health information. Non-compliance may result in legal penalties, reputational damage, and loss of trust.

Mitigation Strategies

Update the GPTranslate plugin to version 2.34.14 or later immediately. Disable server-side translations if not required. Monitor for suspicious activity in translation logs.
