Description

The Gwolle Guestbook plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to Reflected Cross-Site Scripting via the 'permalink' parameter in all versions up to, and including, 5.1.1 due to insufficient input sanitization and output escaping. This makes it possible for unauthenticated attackers to inject arbitrary web scripts in pages that execute if they can successfully trick a user into performing an action such as clicking on a link.

Executive Summary

The Gwolle Guestbook WordPress plugin has a reflected Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) vulnerability in versions up to 5.1.1. It occurs because the 'permalink' parameter does not properly sanitize or escape user input, allowing attackers to inject malicious scripts. These scripts execute when a user clicks a crafted link.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, inspect WordPress sites using the Gwolle Guestbook plugin up to version 5.1.1. Check for unsanitized 'permalink' parameter usage in URLs or logs. Look for reflected XSS attempts in web server access logs or security plugins.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could trick you into clicking a malicious link, leading to unauthorized script execution in your browser. This may result in session hijacking, stolen cookies, or defacement of the affected WordPress site. User accounts could be compromised if sensitive data is exposed.

Compliance Impact

This XSS flaw could lead to unauthorized access to user data, violating GDPR's integrity and confidentiality principles. For HIPAA, it may expose protected health information if exploited on healthcare-related sites. Compliance risks include data breaches and failure to protect user privacy.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately update the Gwolle Guestbook plugin to the latest version beyond 5.1.1. If an update is unavailable, disable or remove the plugin. Implement input sanitization for the 'permalink' parameter and enable Content Security Policy headers.
