Executive Summary

This vulnerability is a denial of service issue in IBM WebSphere Application Server and WebSphere Application Server Liberty. A remote unauthenticated attacker can exploit it to consume excessive server resources, causing the system to become unavailable.

Detection Guidance

Detecting this vulnerability involves checking the installed versions of IBM WebSphere Application Server or Liberty. For Liberty, verify if the version is between 17.0.0.3 and 26.0.0.10. For traditional WebSphere, check if the version is 8.5 or 9.0. Use commands like 'java -jar bin/productInfo.sh version' for Liberty or check server logs for version details.

Impact Analysis

The impact includes service disruption due to resource exhaustion. Affected systems may slow down or crash, leading to downtime for applications relying on WebSphere. This can affect business operations and user access.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could impact compliance with GDPR and HIPAA by disrupting service availability. A denial of service may lead to unauthorized data access or processing delays, violating GDPR's availability principle or HIPAA's access requirements. However, the provided context does not specify direct compliance impacts.

Mitigation Strategies

Apply the recommended fixes promptly. For Liberty, upgrade to fix pack 26.0.0.11 or later. For traditional WebSphere versions 8.5 and 9.0, upgrade to fix packs 8.5.5.32 or 9.0.5.30 or later. These fixes are expected in Q4 2026. No workarounds are currently available.
