Executive Summary

The Airwallex Online Payments Gateway WordPress plugin before version 1.36.0 has a flaw where it does not verify if incoming payment notifications are genuinely from the payment provider when no webhook secret is set. This allows unauthenticated attackers to forge notifications and mark orders as paid without completing actual payments.

Detection Guidance

Check the installed version of the Airwallex Online Payments Gateway WordPress plugin. If it is below 1.36.0, the system is vulnerable. Use commands like 'wp plugin list' in WordPress CLI or inspect the plugin files in the /wp-content/plugins/ directory.

Impact Analysis

This vulnerability could allow attackers to trick your WordPress site into recording fake payments, leading to financial losses as orders are marked as paid without real transactions. It affects any site using the vulnerable plugin version.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized transactions being marked as paid without actual payment, potentially violating financial record-keeping requirements in standards like GDPR (data integrity) and HIPAA (audit controls). It undermines trust in payment processing integrity, which may result in non-compliance with financial transaction regulations.

Mitigation Strategies

Update the Airwallex Online Payments Gateway plugin to version 1.36.0 or later immediately. If updating is not possible, disable the plugin until an update is applied. Ensure a webhook secret is configured to prevent unauthenticated payment notifications.
