Description

The FluentCart A New Era of eCommerce – Faster, Lighter, and Simpler plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to generic SQL Injection via the 'products[*].variants[*].<attacker-chosen key>' parameter in all versions up to, and including, 1.7.0 due to insufficient escaping on the user supplied parameter and lack of sufficient preparation on the existing SQL query. This makes it possible for authenticated attackers, with custom-level access and above, to append additional SQL queries into already existing queries that can be used to extract sensitive information from the database. On FluentCart Pro installs, non-administrator users assigned the Manager shop role also hold the products/edit permission and are therefore able to exploit this vulnerability without administrator-level access.

CWE ID Description
CWE-89 The product constructs all or part of an SQL command using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the intended SQL command when it is sent to a downstream component. Without sufficient removal or quoting of SQL syntax in user-controllable inputs, the generated SQL query can cause those inputs to be interpreted as SQL instead of ordinary user data.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability is a SQL Injection flaw in the FluentCart WordPress plugin up to version 1.7.0. It occurs when user input in the 'products[*].variants[*].<attacker-chosen key>' parameter is not properly escaped or sanitized. Attackers with custom-level access or above can inject malicious SQL queries to extract sensitive database information. Even non-administrator users with the Manager shop role in FluentCart Pro can exploit this if they have the products/edit permission.

Detection Guidance

To detect this SQL injection vulnerability in FluentCart, inspect WordPress logs for unusual SQL queries or errors related to the 'products[*].variants[*].<attacker-chosen key>' parameter. Check for authenticated requests with suspicious input patterns in the variants field. Use tools like WP-CLI to query database logs for unexpected query executions.

Impact Analysis

If you use the affected FluentCart plugin, attackers could steal sensitive data from your WordPress database, such as customer information, payment details, or admin credentials. This could lead to data breaches, financial loss, or unauthorized access to your store. The impact depends on your store's data and security measures.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could violate compliance with GDPR and HIPAA by exposing personal or health-related data. GDPR requires protecting user data, and a breach could lead to fines. HIPAA mandates safeguarding health information, and a breach could result in penalties. Exploiting this flaw may lead to unauthorized data access, violating these regulations.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately update FluentCart to the latest version beyond 1.7.0. If an update is unavailable, disable the plugin temporarily. Restrict custom-level and Manager shop role permissions to reduce attack surface. Monitor database queries for unauthorized access attempts.
