Description

In Thelia v2.6.0, both the administrative login and forgotten password endpoints return different responses for invalid usernames and incorrect passwords, allowing unauthenticated attackers to enumerate valid administrator accounts. Because the endpoint also lacks rate limiting or other protections against repeated authentication attempts, username enumeration can be performed efficiently at scale.

Executive Summary

In Thelia v2.6.0, the login and password recovery endpoints reveal different responses for invalid usernames versus incorrect passwords. This allows attackers to identify valid administrator accounts without authentication. The lack of rate limiting also enables efficient, large-scale account enumeration.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, you can send requests to the administrative login and forgotten password endpoints and compare the responses for invalid usernames versus incorrect passwords. If the responses differ, it may indicate account enumeration is possible.

Impact Analysis

Attackers could exploit this to discover valid admin accounts, increasing the risk of targeted brute-force attacks or phishing attempts. Compromised accounts may lead to unauthorized access, data breaches, or system manipulation.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could violate compliance requirements by exposing sensitive admin accounts, potentially leading to unauthorized data access. GDPR and HIPAA mandate strong authentication and protection against account enumeration to safeguard personal data.

Mitigation Strategies

Implement rate limiting on the administrative login and forgotten password endpoints to prevent brute force attacks. Ensure consistent error messages for invalid usernames and incorrect passwords to avoid account enumeration.
