CWE ID Description
CWE-89 The product constructs all or part of an SQL command using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the intended SQL command when it is sent to a downstream component. Without sufficient removal or quoting of SQL syntax in user-controllable inputs, the generated SQL query can cause those inputs to be interpreted as SQL instead of ordinary user data.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability is an SQL Injection flaw in Movable Type's Site Search function. It allows an unauthenticated attacker to execute arbitrary SQL queries on the affected system by exploiting improper input validation in the search feature.

Detection Guidance

To detect SQL Injection in Movable Type's Site Search function, check for unusual database queries or errors in logs. Inspect HTTP requests to mt-search.cgi or mt-ftsearch.cgi for suspicious input patterns like single quotes or SQL keywords (e.g., UNION, SELECT). Use tools like SQLmap to test for vulnerabilities by sending crafted payloads to these endpoints.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could exploit this to read, modify, or delete sensitive data in the database, gain unauthorized access to the system, or perform other malicious actions depending on the database permissions.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized data access or breaches, potentially violating GDPR (data protection) and HIPAA (health information privacy) requirements for safeguarding sensitive data.

Mitigation Strategies

Apply the latest security patches or updates provided by Movable Type to fix the SQL Injection vulnerability in the Site Search function. If patches are unavailable, consider disabling the Site Search function temporarily or restricting access to it until a fix is applied.
