Description

The Responsive Lightbox & Gallery plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to Stored Cross-Site Scripting via the 'comment' parameter in all versions up to, and including, 2.7.9 due to insufficient input sanitization and output escaping. This makes it possible for authenticated attackers, with editor-level access and above, to inject arbitrary web scripts in pages that will execute whenever a user accesses an injected page. Exploitation requires the plugin's 'Comments' lightbox setting to be enabled (disabled by default), a moderator to approve the injected comment, and a site visitor to click the affected image to open the lightbox.

Executive Summary

This is a Stored Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) vulnerability in the Responsive Lightbox & Gallery WordPress plugin up to version 2.7.9. It occurs due to insufficient input sanitization and output escaping in the 'comment' parameter. Authenticated attackers with editor-level access or higher can inject malicious scripts into pages. Exploitation requires specific conditions: the plugin's 'Comments' lightbox setting must be enabled, a moderator must approve the injected comment, and a visitor must click the affected image to open the lightbox.

Detection Guidance

Check if the Responsive Lightbox & Gallery plugin is installed and its version is up to 2.7.9. Inspect WordPress comments for suspicious scripts in the 'comment' parameter. Review plugin settings to confirm if 'Comments' lightbox is enabled.

Impact Analysis

If exploited, this vulnerability allows attackers to inject malicious scripts into your WordPress site. This could lead to unauthorized actions on behalf of users, theft of sensitive data like cookies or session tokens, or defacement of your website. Users visiting infected pages may have their browsers compromised, potentially spreading malware or stealing credentials.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to non-compliance with GDPR and HIPAA by exposing user data to unauthorized parties. GDPR requires protection of personal data, and a breach could result in fines. HIPAA mandates safeguards for protected health information; a successful attack could violate these requirements, leading to legal penalties and reputational damage.

Mitigation Strategies

Update the Responsive Lightbox & Gallery plugin to the latest version beyond 2.7.9. Disable the 'Comments' lightbox setting if enabled. Review and remove any suspicious comments with script tags. Restrict editor-level access to trusted users only.
