Description

The The Slim SEO – AI SEO Plugin, Lightweight, Fast & Automated plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to arbitrary shortcode execution in all versions up to, and including, 4.11.1 This is due to the software allowing users to execute an action that does not properly validate a value before running do_shortcode. This makes it possible for authenticated attackers, with subscriber-level access and above, to execute arbitrary shortcodes. A Subscriber-level user need only save the shortcode payload to their own Biographical Info field via the REST API or wp-admin profile page; the shortcode then executes on any unauthenticated front-end request that resolves that author's description, such as requests using the ?author= query parameter when auto_redirection is disabled.

Executive Summary

The Slim SEO – AI SEO Plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to arbitrary shortcode execution in versions up to 4.11.1. This flaw allows authenticated attackers with subscriber-level access to execute arbitrary shortcodes by saving malicious payloads to their Biographical Info field via the REST API or wp-admin profile page. The shortcode then executes on unauthenticated front-end requests, such as those using the ?author= query parameter.

Detection Guidance

Check WordPress user profiles for unexpected shortcode entries in the Biographical Info field. Inspect author archive pages for unintended shortcode execution by accessing URLs like ?author=1. Review Slim SEO plugin versions to confirm if they are below or equal to 4.11.1.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could inject malicious shortcodes into a user's profile bio, leading to unintended code execution on the front end. This could result in unauthorized actions, data exposure, or defacement of the website. The vulnerability affects any unauthenticated user accessing author archives or pages where the malicious shortcode is triggered.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized data access or modification, violating GDPR's integrity and confidentiality principles or HIPAA's safeguards for protected health information. If exploited, it may result in data breaches, non-compliance with data protection requirements, and potential legal penalties.

Mitigation Strategies

Update the Slim SEO plugin to the latest patched version. Remove any suspicious shortcodes from user Biographical Info fields. Disable subscriber-level access if not required. Monitor front-end pages for unauthorized shortcode execution.
