Description

Incomplete List of Disallowed Inputs (CWE-184) in the dangerous-extension confirmation of the archive object viewer (peach.pas, grid_obj_open) in PeaZip 10.5.0 through 11.2.0 on Windows allows an attacker who convinces a victim to open an entry of a crafted archive to execute a program, or an arbitrary command, with no confirmation dialog. The prompt (Do you want to run this file?) is gated by SECEXTCONST, a hard-coded list of seven extensions (exe cmd msi bat ps1 vbs reg); the check is an exact string comparison of the entry extension against that list, so it answers only whether the extension is one of the seven and never whether the shell will execute the file. Shell-executable and scripting-host types that Windows runs through ShellExecuteW are absent from the list, among them .url and .lnk. An archived Windows Internet Shortcut (.url) whose URL line is attacker-controlled is launched with no prompt, while the byte-identical content in an entry named .bat does raise the warning in the same session. A .lnk entry raises the ceiling from launching a program to running a command line, because a Windows shortcut carries arguments: a proof-of-concept shortcut targeting cmd.exe with an attacker-chosen command line executed with no prompt. The shortcut target is not confined to the local disk; the shell also resolved an attacker-named UNC path (fetching a remote payload was only attempted, not demonstrated). No privilege escalation; everything runs as the user who opened the archive.

CWE ID Description
CWE-693 The product does not use or incorrectly uses a protection mechanism that provides sufficient defense against directed attacks against the product.
CWE-184 The product implements a protection mechanism that relies on a list of inputs (or properties of inputs) that are not allowed by policy or otherwise require other action to neutralize before additional processing takes place, but the list is incomplete.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability is an Incomplete List of Disallowed Inputs (CWE-184) in PeaZip 10.5.0 through 11.2.0 for Windows. The archive object viewer only checks for seven specific dangerous extensions (exe, cmd, msi, bat, ps1, vbs, reg) before showing a confirmation prompt. It fails to include other executable types like .url and .lnk, which Windows can execute without prompting. An attacker can embed a malicious .url or .lnk file in an archive to run programs or commands without user confirmation.

Detection Guidance

Check PeaZip version on Windows systems. If using versions 10.5.0 through 11.2.0, the system is vulnerable. Look for suspicious archive files containing .url or .lnk entries that execute without prompts. Monitor for unexpected program launches from archives.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could trick you into opening a crafted archive containing a malicious .url or .lnk file. This could execute arbitrary programs or commands on your system without your knowledge or consent. The attack runs with your user privileges, so it does not escalate privileges but could lead to malware installation, data theft, or further compromise of your system.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized code execution, potentially violating data protection requirements under GDPR (e.g., unauthorized access to personal data) and HIPAA (e.g., unauthorized access to protected health information). Organizations using vulnerable PeaZip versions may fail to implement adequate security controls to prevent such attacks, risking non-compliance with these regulations.

Mitigation Strategies

Upgrade PeaZip to version 11.3.0 or higher immediately. Avoid opening archives from untrusted sources. Disable automatic execution of archive contents. Review and restrict user permissions to limit impact of potential exploits.
