Executive Summary

This is an Insecure Direct Object Reference (IDOR) vulnerability in the Academy LMS WordPress plugin before version 4.0.0. It allows authenticated users with subscriber-level access or higher to view quiz answer options for courses they are not enrolled in by exploiting improper authorization checks. The plugin fails to verify if a quiz question belongs to a course the user has permission to access.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, check if your Academy LMS plugin version is below 4.0.0. Log in as a subscriber or higher and attempt to access quiz answer options for courses you are not enrolled in. If the answers are visible, the vulnerability exists.

Impact Analysis

An attacker with access to a single course could read quiz answer options for other courses they are not authorized to view. This could lead to unauthorized access to sensitive information, academic dishonesty, or competitive advantages in educational settings.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could potentially violate data protection regulations like GDPR or HIPAA if it leads to unauthorized access to personal or sensitive information. Educational institutions must ensure proper access controls to maintain compliance with these standards.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately update the Academy LMS plugin to version 4.0.0 or later to patch the vulnerability. If updating is not possible, restrict user access to quiz answer options or disable the affected functionality until the update is applied.
