Description

tinytag is a Python library for reading audio file metadata. From 2.0.0 until 2.3.0, an M4A file containing a sub-atom with a size of zero inside a ---- atom can cause the metadata parser to stop advancing through the input. The custom-field atom traversal repeatedly processes the malformed location, causing an infinite loop and denying service to a program that reads the crafted file. This issue is fixed in version 2.3.0.

Executive Summary

CVE-2026-104266 is an infinite loop vulnerability in the tinytag Python library affecting versions 2.0.0 to 2.3.0. It occurs when parsing M4A files containing a sub-atom with a size of zero inside a ---- atom. The parser repeatedly processes the malformed location, causing a denial-of-service for programs reading such files.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, scan systems using tinytag for versions 2.0.0 to 2.2.x. Check for files with malformed M4A atoms, particularly those with zero-sized sub-atoms in ---- atoms. Use commands like 'pip show tinytag' to verify the installed version. If vulnerable, upgrade to 2.3.0 or later.

Impact Analysis

This vulnerability can cause programs using tinytag to hang or crash when processing malicious M4A files. It denies service to applications relying on tinytag for audio metadata extraction, potentially disrupting automated workflows or media processing tasks.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately upgrade tinytag to version 2.3.0 or later. No workarounds exist, so updating is the only mitigation. Verify the upgrade with 'pip show tinytag' and ensure all applications using tinytag are restarted to apply the fix.
