Executive Summary

This is a reflected cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability in YesWiki versions before 4.6.7. It occurs in the mail handler where the 'field' parameter is not properly sanitized. Attackers can craft malicious links that inject JavaScript code into a victim's browser when the link is clicked.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, check if your YesWiki instance is running a version before 4.6.7. Inspect network traffic for requests to the mail handler with the field parameter containing unsanitized input. Look for reflected XSS patterns like '><img src=x onerror=prompt(1)>' in URLs or responses.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could steal session cookies, perform actions on behalf of the user, or redirect users to malicious websites. This could lead to unauthorized access to sensitive data or account takeover if the victim is logged into YesWiki.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized data access or modification, violating GDPR's data protection requirements and HIPAA's security rules for protected health information. Organizations may face compliance penalties if user data is compromised through this flaw.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately upgrade YesWiki to version 4.6.7 or later. If upgrading is not possible, implement input validation and output encoding for the field parameter. Add a Content Security Policy (CSP) to mitigate XSS risks. Monitor for suspicious activity in web server logs.
