Executive Summary

This is a stored cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability in the Envira Gallery WordPress plugin before version 1.16.1. It allows users with the Author role or higher to inject malicious scripts into a gallery image identifier. The scripts execute when any visitor, including administrators, views a page containing the affected gallery.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, check the version of the Envira Gallery plugin installed on your WordPress site. If it is below version 1.16.1, the system is vulnerable. You can verify the version by inspecting the plugin files or using WordPress admin panel.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could steal sensitive data like session cookies or login credentials from users viewing the gallery. They might also perform actions on behalf of users, such as changing passwords or making unauthorized purchases. Administrators are particularly at risk as their elevated access could be exploited.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to data breaches, violating GDPR's data protection requirements and potentially resulting in fines. For HIPAA, unauthorized access to health-related data could compromise patient privacy, leading to legal and financial penalties.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately update the Envira Gallery plugin to version 1.16.1 or later. This version addresses the stored XSS vulnerability by properly sanitizing and escaping gallery item identifiers. Ensure no unauthorized scripts have been injected before updating.
