Description

The Animated Number Counters WordPress plugin before 3.1 does not sanitise or escape a value stored by an Editor-level user before concatenating it into a SQL query that runs when any unauthenticated visitor renders a page containing the counter, leading to second-order SQL injection that can read arbitrary data including password hashes.

Executive Summary

The Animated Number Counters WordPress plugin before version 3.1 has a second-order SQL injection flaw. An Editor-level user can inject malicious SQL code into a stored value. When an unauthenticated visitor views a page with a counter, this value is used in a SQL query without proper sanitization or escaping, allowing attackers to read arbitrary database data including password hashes.

Detection Guidance

Check if the Animated Number Counters WordPress plugin version is below 3.1. Inspect WordPress admin pages for suspicious counter configurations or unexpected SQL queries in logs. Review database access patterns for unauthorized reads.

Impact Analysis

If you use the vulnerable plugin version, an attacker with Editor access could exploit this to steal sensitive data like password hashes from your WordPress database. Unauthenticated visitors viewing affected pages could trigger the malicious query, potentially exposing confidential information.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access to personal data, violating GDPR and HIPAA requirements for data protection and access controls. A breach of password hashes or other sensitive data may result in non-compliance, potential fines, and reputational damage.

Mitigation Strategies

Update the Animated Number Counters plugin to version 3.1 or later immediately. Remove or disable the plugin if not essential. Audit database access logs for signs of exploitation.
