Executive Summary

The TutorStarter WordPress theme before version 4.0.4 has a flaw in an AJAX registration handler that ignores the site's user registration setting. This allows unauthenticated visitors to create WordPress user accounts even when registration is disabled.

Detection Guidance

Check if unauthenticated user registration is possible by attempting to access the vulnerable AJAX handler endpoint. Inspect WordPress site logs for unusual registration attempts or new user creation events. Use WPScan to scan for vulnerable TutorStarter theme versions.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could exploit this to create unauthorized user accounts on your WordPress site, potentially leading to spam, privilege escalation, or further attacks if those accounts gain elevated access.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could potentially violate compliance with GDPR and HIPAA by allowing unauthorized user account creation. Uncontrolled account creation may lead to unauthorized access to personal data, violating data protection requirements under these regulations.

Mitigation Strategies

Update the TutorStarter theme to version 4.0.4 or later immediately. If updating is not possible, disable user registration in WordPress settings or restrict access to the AJAX registration handler via server rules.
