Race Condition in Apache Struts via Shared Message Formatter

Description

Concurrent execution using shared resource with improper synchronization ('race condition') vulnerability in Apache Struts. Where a localized message formats a date or time argument, the formatter retained for that message by the application-wide text provider is used by concurrently served requests without isolation, so a value belonging to one user can appear in another user's response, or the rendering can fail and surface as a server error. Applications whose localized messages format no date or time arguments are not affected. This issue affects Apache Struts: from 2.0.0 through 2.3.37, from 2.5.0 through 2.5.33, from 6.0.0 through 6.11.0, from 7.0.0 through 7.3.0. Users are recommended to upgrade to version 6.12.0 or 7.4.0, which fixes the issue.

Executive Summary

This is a race condition vulnerability in Apache Struts where a shared message formatter between concurrent requests causes one user's date or time value to appear in another user's response. It affects applications using localized messages that format date or time arguments.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, check if your Apache Struts version falls within the affected ranges (2.0.0-2.3.37, 2.5.0-2.5.33, 6.0.0-6.11.0, 7.0.0-7.3.0). Use commands like 'find / -name struts*.jar' to locate Struts JAR files and verify versions. Check application logs for errors related to message formatting or concurrent request handling.

  • For Linux/macOS: find / -name struts*.jar 2>/dev/null | xargs ls -lh
Impact Analysis

The vulnerability can lead to data disclosure where sensitive date or time values from one user appear in another user's response. It may also cause server errors or denial of service by failing to render messages properly.

Mitigation Strategies

Upgrade Apache Struts to version 6.12.0 or 7.4.0 immediately. If upgrading is not possible, implement a workaround by formatting date or time values before passing them to localized messages. This prevents the shared formatter issue causing data leaks or errors.
