Description

The LifterLMS – WP LMS for eLearning, Online Courses, & Quizzes plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to PHP Object Injection in all versions up to, and including, 10.2.1 via deserialization of untrusted input . This makes it possible for authenticated attackers, with custom-level access and above, to inject a PHP Object. No known POP chain is present in the vulnerable software, which means this vulnerability has no impact unless another plugin or theme containing a POP chain is installed on the site. If a POP chain is present via an additional plugin or theme installed on the target system, it may allow the attacker to perform actions like delete arbitrary files, retrieve sensitive data, or execute code depending on the POP chain present. This vulnerability is only exploitable during lesson creation when a temporary lesson ID triggers the custom metadata path, and requires the attacker to hold a role with the edit_course capability, such as Instructor, Instructor's Assistant, LMS Manager, or Administrator.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability is a PHP Object Injection flaw in the LifterLMS WordPress plugin affecting versions up to 10.2.1. It allows authenticated attackers with custom-level access or higher to inject PHP objects via deserialization of untrusted input. Exploitation requires the attacker to have a role like Instructor or Administrator and occurs during lesson creation when a temporary lesson ID triggers the custom metadata path.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, check if the LifterLMS plugin version is up to 10.2.1 or lower. Inspect WordPress user roles with edit_course capability (Instructor, Administrator, etc.). Monitor for unusual lesson creation activity or file access patterns during lesson creation.

Impact Analysis

If exploited, this vulnerability could allow attackers to delete arbitrary files, retrieve sensitive data, or execute code on the affected WordPress site. However, this requires another plugin or theme with a POP chain to be installed, as no known POP chain exists in LifterLMS itself.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could potentially lead to unauthorized access or manipulation of sensitive data, which may violate compliance requirements under GDPR (data protection) and HIPAA (healthcare data). If exploited via a POP chain, attackers could retrieve or delete sensitive data, posing significant compliance risks.

Mitigation Strategies

Update the LifterLMS plugin to the latest version. Remove unnecessary user roles with edit_course capability. Disable lesson creation temporarily if possible. Review file access logs for suspicious activity. Consider disabling PHP object injection via server configuration if no POP chain is needed.
