Description

The Groundhogg β€” CRM, Newsletters, and Marketing Automation plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to Privilege Escalation in all versions up to, and including, 4.9 This is due to a missing ownership and capability check on the `user` parameter within the `process_edit()` function, which allows any authenticated user with the `edit_contacts` capability to reassign a contact record's linked WordPress user ID to any arbitrary account without requiring the `edit_users` or `promote_users` capabilities. This makes it possible for authenticated attackers, with sales_rep-level access and above, to escalate their privileges to administrator by linking a contact to an administrator's WordPress user ID, then creating a note containing the `{auto_login_link}` replacement tag to trigger generation of a valid auto-login permissions-key URL for the administrator-linked contact, and finally visiting that URL to authenticate as the targeted administrator. The auto-login URL is stored in the note content and is readable back by the attacker via the `view_notes` and `add_notes` capabilities that the sales_rep role holds by default.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability in the Groundhogg WordPress plugin allows authenticated users with limited privileges to escalate their access to administrator level. The flaw exists in the process_edit() function where a missing capability check lets users reassign contact records to any WordPress user account. Attackers can then generate auto-login links for administrator accounts and gain unauthorized access.

Detection Guidance

Check for unauthorized privilege escalation by reviewing contact-to-user linking in Groundhogg plugin logs. Look for notes containing auto-login links or changes to user IDs in contact records. Inspect WordPress user roles for unexpected administrator assignments.

Impact Analysis

If exploited, this vulnerability could allow attackers with basic access to take full control of your WordPress site. They could perform administrative actions, steal sensitive data, install malicious plugins, or deface your website. The impact severity is high with a CVSS score of 8.8.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access to personal data, violating GDPR and HIPAA requirements for data protection and access controls. A breach could result in regulatory fines, legal liabilities, and reputational damage due to compromised sensitive information.

Mitigation Strategies

Update the Groundhogg plugin to the latest version immediately. Review all contact records for unauthorized user ID changes. Remove any suspicious administrator-linked contacts. Audit user roles for unexpected privilege escalations.
