Authorization Bypass in AI Puffer WordPress Plugin

Description

The AI Puffer – Chat. Create. Automate. (formerly AI Power) plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to authorization bypass in all versions up to, and including, 2.4.89. This is due to the plugin not properly verifying that a user is authorized to perform an action. This makes it possible for authenticated attackers, with subscriber-level access and above, to modify global plugin indexing and vector-search configuration options (aipkit_training_general_settings and aipkit_indexing_field_settings), including chunking parameters, file upload visibility, and per-CPT field indexing settings, affecting all users of the plugin. This is only exploitable in configurations where an administrator has granted 'sources' module access to a lower-privileged role via the plugin's Role Manager.

Executive Summary

The AI Puffer WordPress plugin up to version 2.4.89 has an authorization bypass flaw. It fails to verify user permissions properly, allowing authenticated attackers with subscriber-level access or higher to modify global plugin settings. This includes changing indexing configurations, file upload visibility, and per-content-type field settings.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, check if the AI Puffer plugin is installed and verify its version. If it is version 2.4.89 or lower, the system is vulnerable. Inspect WordPress user roles for unauthorized 'sources' module access granted to lower-privileged roles.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could alter plugin configurations to expose sensitive data, disrupt AI indexing, or change how files and content are processed. This affects all users of the plugin and could lead to unauthorized modifications or data leaks if the plugin handles sensitive information.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized data exposure or modification, violating GDPR's data integrity and confidentiality requirements. For HIPAA, it may risk protected health information (PHI) exposure if the plugin processes such data. Compliance could be compromised if attackers exploit this to access or alter sensitive data.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately update the AI Puffer plugin to the latest version. Review and restrict user roles to ensure only authorized users have access to the 'sources' module. Remove any unauthorized access granted to lower-privileged roles via the plugin's Role Manager.
