Description

The Customer Email Verification for WooCommerce plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to Privilege Escalation via the `alg_wc_ev_verify_email` parameter in versions up to, and including, 3.3.0. The vulnerability exists because `alg_wc_ev_generate_user_code()` generates the per-user activation secret using `wp_rand(100)` when the plugin's 'Encoding method' is set to 'hashids', producing only ~101 possible values (~7 bits of entropy); the resulting token is a reversible Hashids encoding with no cryptographic MAC, and the unauthenticated `verify()` handler β€” hooked to `init` at `PHP_INT_MAX` with no nonce check and no rate limiting β€” accepts and acts on the attacker-controlled `?alg_wc_ev_verify_email=` GET parameter directly. This makes it possible for unauthenticated attackers to gain authentication as any unverified WordPress account, including administrator-level accounts, by brute-forcing the trivially small activation code space via a forged verification URL. Exploitation requires that the 'Encoding method' setting be changed to 'hashids' (non-default), that the attacker recover or brute-force the Hashids salt (which defaults to an `md5(time())` value set at first initialization), and that the target account's email address remain unverified.

Executive Summary

This is a privilege escalation vulnerability in the Customer Email Verification for WooCommerce plugin for WordPress. It allows unauthenticated attackers to gain admin access by brute-forcing a weak activation code. The plugin generates predictable tokens with only 7 bits of entropy when the 'hashids' encoding method is used. Attackers can exploit this by forging verification URLs and brute-forcing the small code space.

Detection Guidance

Check if the Customer Email Verification for WooCommerce plugin is installed and its version is up to 3.3.0. Inspect WordPress site files for the presence of the vulnerable parameter alg_wc_ev_verify_email and the 'Encoding method' set to 'hashids'.

Impact Analysis

If you use this plugin with the 'hashids' encoding method enabled, an attacker could gain full control of your WordPress site, including admin privileges. This could lead to data theft, site defacement, malware installation, or complete site takeover. The attack is possible without authentication and requires only the target email address.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access to sensitive user data, violating GDPR and HIPAA requirements for data protection and access control. A successful exploit may result in data breaches, triggering mandatory breach notifications and potential fines under these regulations.

Mitigation Strategies

Update the Customer Email Verification for WooCommerce plugin to the latest version. Disable the 'hashids' encoding method if currently enabled. Implement rate limiting and nonce checks for the verification handler. Rotate any exposed Hashids salts and reset activation codes.
