Description

The GeoDirectory – WP Business Directory Plugin and Classified Listings Directory plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to Local File Inclusion in all versions up to, and including, 2.8.187 via the 'design_type' parameter parameter. This makes it possible for unauthenticated attackers to include and execute arbitrary .php files on the server, allowing the execution of any PHP code in those files. This can be used to bypass access controls, obtain sensitive data, or achieve code execution in cases where .php file types can be uploaded and included. The required nonce is trivially obtainable by any anonymous visitor, as the geodir_basic_nonce value is localized to every public frontend page via the geodir_params script object, meaning no authentication, user interaction, or specific site content is required to exploit this vulnerability.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability is a Local File Inclusion (LFI) flaw in the GeoDirectory WordPress plugin versions up to 2.8.187. It allows unauthenticated attackers to include and execute arbitrary PHP files on the server by manipulating the 'design_type' parameter. The attack requires no authentication or user interaction because the necessary nonce is exposed to all visitors via the geodir_params script.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, check if your GeoDirectory plugin is running a version up to 2.8.187. Use WordPress admin to view the plugin version or run a server command like 'wp plugin list --name=geodirectory' if using WP-CLI. Inspect server access logs for unusual PHP file inclusions or requests containing the 'design_type' parameter with path traversal sequences like '../'.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could exploit this to execute malicious PHP code on your server, potentially leading to full system compromise. This could allow them to steal sensitive data, install backdoors, or take control of your WordPress site and hosting environment.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access to sensitive data, violating GDPR and HIPAA requirements for data protection and access controls. A breach could result in regulatory fines, legal liabilities, and reputational damage due to non-compliance with data security standards.

Mitigation Strategies

Update the GeoDirectory plugin to version 2.8.188 or later to address the vulnerability. This version includes fixes for directory traversal and local file inclusion issues.
