Description

The Academy LMS – AI Course Builder, Quizzes, Certificates & eLearning plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to authorization bypass in all versions up to, and including, 4.0.3. This is due to the plugin not properly verifying that a user is authorized to perform an action. This makes it possible for authenticated attackers, with custom-level access and above, to permanently delete arbitrary Academy lesson comments and their replies authored by any user, including administrators, across courses they do not instruct. This is exploitable by any user registered as an Academy instructor for at least one course, as they can supply their own course_id to pass the instructor check while targeting comments belonging to entirely different courses.

Executive Summary

The Academy LMS plugin for WordPress has an authorization bypass flaw in versions up to 4.0.3. This allows authenticated attackers with custom-level access or higher to permanently delete lesson comments and replies from any user, including administrators, even if they don't teach those courses. Attackers exploit this by using their own course ID to bypass instructor checks while targeting comments in other courses.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, check WordPress sites using the Academy LMS plugin version 4.0.3 or lower. Review user activity logs for unauthorized deletion of lesson comments, especially by instructors targeting comments outside their courses. No specific commands are provided in the context.

Impact Analysis

If you use the Academy LMS plugin, an attacker with instructor access could delete important course discussions, student feedback, or administrative comments. This could disrupt learning, cause data loss, and undermine course integrity. Even non-instructor users with basic access might exploit this if they have custom-level permissions.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to non-compliance with GDPR or HIPAA if it results in unauthorized deletion of user-generated content containing personal or sensitive data. Permanent loss of such data may violate retention policies or data integrity requirements under these regulations.

Mitigation Strategies

Update the Academy LMS – AI Course Builder plugin to the latest version beyond 4.0.3 to patch the authorization bypass vulnerability.
